SAILING: from FOXSPORT.IT - PONTAROLO SAILING TEAM AT THE 200 CREW REGATTA

|
Caorle, 23rd May 2008 - The young Pontarolo Sailing Team decided to start the sailing season 2008 with the 200 crew regatta. It is a very demanding race: in fact "200" stands for 200 nautical miles that are to be covered with no stops starting from Caorle, sailing towards the offshore buoy of Grado, rounding the island of Susak and returning to Caorle.
This regatta was a hard test both for the sailboat steered by the owner, Valerio Pontarolo, and the crew coordinated by the owner of Professione Vela, Vlacich Manuel. 45 sailboats were at the start in Caorle for the XXIV edition of the ICM 200 Regatta Trophy, organised by the Sailing Society Port of Santa Margherita in cooperation with the dockyard Marina 4. In spite of a drizzle and overcast, the race started at 11 AM as planned from the stretch of the sea overlooking the Port of Santa Margherita and the starting gate in front of the Church Madonna dell'Angelo.
The start was very good and fast owing to the choice of cutting the starting line with the new Gennaker of the Pontarolo Sailing Team. The first miles of the regatta were not easy since, in spite of adopting the correct tactics, the wind was steadily falling and the boat continued to slow down due its tonnage and weight.
After rounding the offshore buoy of Grado, our boat started gaining on other boats and overtaking them one after another owing to the excellent work of the crew and the helmsman, in particular during the night between the 23rd and the 24th: by heading for a different course than most of the other sailboats, the team managed to gain on a number of them.
During the early hours of the 24th the team rounded the island of Susak and headed towards the finish line located before the pier of the dockyard of Caorle.
The south-east wind that was blowing during the entire race gave the crew the possibility to use their new impressive spinnaker over more than 90 nautical miles all the way to Caorle.
This was the first long regatta of the crew. Nevertheless, owing to the crew's enthusiasm, team spirit and the expertise of the helmsman and the owner of the boat, engineer Valerio Pontarolo, Windi won the third place in this regatta even though its rivals' boats were much lighter (ideal for that weather) and designed in most cases for this sort of sailboat races.
The next regattas in which the Team will participate are respectively the Click and Sail race (14th June), in which the captains of the Aviano Military Base shall take part as well (as guests on sailboats), and the Rotary Club International Trophy (15th June) in Lignano Sabbiadoro.

ROTARY CLUB OFFSHORE REGATTA: AN IMMEDIATE SUCCESS
16th June 2007
For the first time a sailing society from Friuli and one of the sections of the Rotary Club International organised a reserved boat race, which turned out to be successful both among the participants and the public.
The initiative was launched by the District 2060 of the Club Service, in particular Mr. Florio Camporese, and the Yacht Club Lignano with the support of the Marina Punta Faro. The 1st Rotary Cup was born in a very important moment for sailing, i.e. when the attention of all fans was fixed upon the famous Louis Vuitton Cup and the America's Cup. Therefore, a minimum notice time was sufficient for many members of the Rotary Club to join the event, which already had all the prerequisites to be successful. The course of the race was in the shape of a triangle to be covered twice, with rounding marks at the offshore buoy of Lignano Sabbiadoro, in the open sea before the mouth of the river Tagliamento and the wharf of Pineta. In that way numerous bathers were able to enjoy different stages of the regatta, just like in Valencia, by staying comfortably on the sandy beach. The weather conditions turned out to be ideal for the race, with a constant south-east wind and small waves. The fastest sailboat was Windi, owned by Valerio Pontarolo, which arrived at the finish line after two hours and fifty-three minutes. Pontarolo remained unchallenged by winning also the Zero category with more than seven minutes advantage over Marco Dal Pont's Sunflower, that won the first place in the Alfa category before Roberto Riscica's Tatana, that came third in the overall. The forth place went to Fabio Barison's Nuvola, that was first in the Charlie category. Kumatos Anthos was the winner of the Bravo category, while the first place in the Delta category went to Paolo Albertis's Laurocchia of the Yacht Club Adriaco. |
